Places to Visit

The National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool

Located two miles away from “the beach house” is the National Museum of the Royal Navy, on Hartlepool Marina (2 miles away), where you’ll get a glimpse into what life in a British seaport was like in the 18th century. It is an interactive museum that uses artifacts from warships and land forces to tell the story of the Royal Navy. Ideal for exploring different aspects of history with your children.

St Hilda’s church

One of the most important churches in the North of England. The church stands by the sea, yet it gives a sense of hermitage due to its simple architecture and lack of ornament. Constructed in the early 11th century, St Hilda’s was built on top of an earlier monastery where St Hilda herself was abbess and lived until her death at 102 years old. A position close to the sea with views across the bay to Seaton Carew, Hartlepool Marina and the North Yorkshire moors.

The Battery and Headland War Memorial

The Battery and Headland War Memorial was originally unveiled by the Earl of Durham in 1921. It’s located in Redheugh Gardens and is dedicated to those Hartlepool civilians and military servicemen who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

The Heugh Lighthouse

The Heugh Lighthouse is located on the northernmost point of The Headland. It is a white-coloured tower standing 85 feet tall and houses a revolving Fresnel lens. The lighthouse was built in 1853 during the Victorian era to assist with navigation and has stood there since then.

A little further away…

Durham

For a taste of ancient city life, head to Durham, home to the magnificent Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle, the 13th-century Crook Hall and Gardens, the Botanic Gardens, and the Oriental Museum; it is a budding historian’s dream!
Continue the coastal fun at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, where you can hook your catch of the day along the pier, enjoy cliff-top walks, and spot the local wildlife within the Saltburn Gill Nature Reserve.
For a memorable day trip, venture into the North York Moors National Park, where you’ll find Whitby, with its Gothic abbey, 199 Steps, glorious beaches, Whitby Museum, and pavilion.

Your next escape to the coast begins at The Beach House.
